Will the Real God Please Stand Up
A devotional thought from Halim Suh for “Creation”
If a thousand people were asked the question “Who is God?” we would likely get a thousand different answers. Everyone has their own ideas about who God is, things they themselves have determined about Him. But the true God is a real Person. Once we define God the way we’d like Him to be, He becomes a fictional character created in our own minds, at which point we are no longer worshiping the one true God but a false god of our own making.
Thankfully, our God isn’t silent. He is not playing a game of hide and seek with us so that the only way we can believe in Him is by making Him up. He has showered clues and pointers to Himself throughout all of creation. Not only that, but He has given us the Bible to communicate specifically about His nature and ultimately the Person of Jesus to show us the “exact expression of His nature” (Heb. 1:1-3).
Why is this one of the kindest things God can do for His people? Because if He didn’t reveal Himself clearly, then we would make Him up, and we wouldn’t come close to making a god as good as the real One. Of all the versions and variations of gods that people worship, we can look to the Bible and all of creation to see the revelation of the one true God.
Pause and Reflect
• What primarily informs your understanding of God? What are the dangers of letting things other than creation and the Bible shine light on who God really is?
• Why do you think God would want to be known by His people accurately? How do you think He feels when we believe things about Him that are not from His Word and revelation?
