The Bible and Life
A devotional thought from Christian George for “Listening Together to the Voice of God”
Christians live in community, and part of this life involves joining together to listen to the voice of God. As we study and apply Scripture within our communities of faith, we are united by the primacy of God’s Word.
Nehemiah 8 sheds light on the high value God places on the proclamation of His Word. This passage also shows the way God’s people revere God’s Word, both in our posture and in the elevation of the Scriptures. We also see how God’s people rightly respond to the proclamation of Scripture through repenting and holding each other accountable.
In turning our focus to the New Testament, we see the apostolic model of Scripture forming the basis for the fellowship of the early church.
In thinking about your own Christian community, use these passages as springboards for examining the way you approach God’s Word. How central is the Bible in your church service? What about in your small group? How satisfied are you with the respect your community of faith gives to Scripture?
Now turn your attention inward. If the Bible were removed from your relationships with neighbors, coworkers, and family members, would it make a difference? Do you desire for Scripture to be central in your life?
Pause and Reflect
• Spend some time in prayer. Thank God for the body of Christ. Ask God to reveal the ways your church’s interpretation of Scripture influences your own understanding and the areas where we most need the church when interpreting Scripture. Commit to submitting yourself to the authority of a godly Christian community and looking for ways to respond in repentance when you’ve gotten off track. Commit to holding others accountable in love and in truth.
