J D Greear And LifeWay's Kids' Ministry Conference
If you missed LifeWay’s Kids’ Ministry Conference last week you missed a great encouragement from JD Greear who shared about his book Stop Asking Jesus Into Your Heart.
JD’s main encouragement centered around the Scripture found in Romans 12:1-2. Our goal as children’s pastors and leaders is to drive the gospel deeper into the lives of kids so it becomes lasting. The real question is how? How do we do that? Luckily JD gave us three ways! Here they are.
1. In our teaching.
Romans 12:1-2 tell us that transformation comes by the renewing of our minds. We can guide kids on their journey of transformation through four things.
A. Help kids discover their place in God’s story. The Bible is not about telling kids how to act. It’s about God.
B. Our goal should be worship. Our teaching needs to lead kids to develop an awe of God. God’s mighty acts lead us to the only expression necessary, and that is worship.
C. We must constantly pound home to them the revolutionary nature of the gospel. In every story show kids what God has done for them. Salvation from God isn’t based on works or doing things; it’s based on what God has already done.
D. We have to burrow gospel truths deep into their hearts through memorization. Memorization tools and techniques are a great way to help kids always have God’s Word close to them.
2. By discipling parents to create gospel-rich homes.
Children grow best when they are saturated with God’s Word. Take every opportunity to encourage parents to develop a consistent place where their kids see Jesus in them. Help parents be the gospel for their kids.
3. By fostering gospel-rich communities.
Communities are important to kids and they are going to join a community. We as church leaders have an opportunity to affect the community they join. Churches that are about the business of driving the gospel deep do it by providing kids with a community to belong to, a place to get connected with other mentors, and a place in which they serve.
JD’s final encouragement was to church leadership. As a team develop a family ministry plan that will help your families grow closer to God and experience life changing, deep rooted, transformation.
