Fresh Ideas for Large Group
Predictability translates often to boredom for kids. We on the Gospel Project® for Kids team are bringing a few more exciting elements to worship, but what are some ways that you may freshen up Large Group Bible Study at your church?
Revamp your space
I encourage you to decorate as much as your space and budget will allow. But if you can’t decorate by theme, maybe you can re-work your space. Are kids getting distracted during the review or gospel presentation? Maybe you can break up the kids into smaller groups to sit on beanbag chairs or even picnic blankets at that time. Maybe move to another area of the room to give the gospel presentation in a different setting than where you just played a fun game. Don’t feel like you are locked in place!
Tag team with flair
Tag-teaming provides a great opportunity to play around with unit theme. Upcoming themes, such as sports or the lake, could easily feature two leaders who work together to tell the Bible story. If your church has a drama team, call in a few favors! Check in with your church’s A/V ministry; perhaps the crew can brainstorm fun ways to use video or other media in Large Group. Think outside the box—the trick is to engage kids in the Bible story that will stick with them.
Incorporate the kids
Find ways for the kids to make large group their own. Consider placing the key passage in an envelope and taping it under the chairs or pews. Invite the kid with the envelope under his seat to stand and read the key passage. You could also put a slip of paper with the big picture question and some shaving cream into a balloon—you know where this is going—and invite a kid to find and read the big picture question. When done safely, even messy games can keep the kids involved in the Bible story.
However you decide to freshen up Large Group, I encourage you to keep the gospel fresh in your own mind as well. We are praying for you and the kids you teach!
