Explore the Story of Redemption with The Gospel Project Bible
On the day of His resurrection, Jesus walked along the road to Emmaus with two disheartened disciples. The two were discussing and arguing about the events that had taken place in Jerusalem—Jesus’ arrest, trials, and crucifixion. The One they had hoped would be the Redeemer of Israel was dead. And although the tomb was empty, they had not seen the resurrected Jesus.
One can only speculate what they were thinking as they walked down the road, expressing their disappointment that Jesus apparently hadn’t risen…to Jesus. But one can easily imagine how they felt in that moment: Hopeless and perhaps even foolish.
And then, Jesus spoke:
…How unwise and slow you are to believe in your hearts all that the prophets have spoken! Didn’t the Messiah have to suffer these things and enter into His glory? (Luke 24:25-26)
And then, Jesus did something incredible—starting from the beginning of the Scriptures, from “Moses and all the Prophets,” He “interpreted for them the things concerning Himself in all the Scriptures” (Luke 24:27).
In that moment, Jesus revealed to them the purpose of the Bible. He showed them that the Bible isn’t a collection of stories. It’s not even simply the history of a single nation. It is the story of redemption—the story of God’s plan to rescue His people from sin and death through the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
