Are You Talking to Me?
A devotional thought from Lizette Beard for “God in Us”
Luke 18:18: “Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?”
Take a moment and look at the story of Jesus’ nighttime conversation with Nicodemus (John 3:1-8). What was Nicodemus’ background? What about Jesus’ words confused Nicodemus?
Meet another man that Jesus talked to known simply as “the rich young ruler.” Read Luke 18:18-30 and think about what the young man’s question to Jesus revealed about his desires?
The young man’s interest seemed to be eternal life, but his question revealed more than he intended. He wanted to know what he (the young man) could do. Jesus uncovered the man’s real motivation and exposed it by asking the man to give up everything that could be counted. The man asked Jesus one thing, and Jesus gave him a very clear and distinct path—sell everything, give it to the poor, and THEN he would have treasure in heaven.
Just as Jesus knew that Nicodemus needed to understand that a spiritual life can only come from the Spirit above, Jesus knew that what the rich young ruler needed was to understand that no one is good except God and that eternal life is not earned, it is given.
Pause and Reflect
• Can you think of anything that you are doing more to earn God’s favor rather than in response to God’s grace and goodness?
• What in your life feels more like a church chore than a gift freely given to the body of believers?
