A devotional thought from Rey De Armas from “Do Not Covet”
Read: Luke 12:13-15
The Lord of the Rings is an epic tale about a group of mythical people who journey to the land of Mordor in order to destroy a ring with the power to control all living things. Along the way, different members of the group find themselves tempted to take possession of the ring. Whenever this temptation takes place, it often comes at the expense of another member of the group. One even seeks to kill another member of the group because of his strong desire for the ring. Each member is forced to encounter their own desire for the ring and the greed for power that accompanies this desire.
Greed can cause anyone to do crazy things. In Luke 12, greed caused a man to interrupt Jesus and change the focus of the group to himself. He was so concerned with his own inheritance that he would take the risk of disrespecting the Son of God in order to get in his question. Although Jesus responded with grace, He also warned the man to beware of his own greed. The desire from within can cause problems on the outside.
We too must heed the warning and beware of the greed that exists within each of us. It can drive us to do crazy things that could cost us our relationships, possessions, or even affect our relationship with God. Much like the band that journeyed to Mordor, we could find ourselves sacrificing someone close to us in order to satisfy a meaningless desire for possessions, power, or status.
Pause & Reflect:
• How have you seen greed affect your life?
• What should we do when we sense the desire to fulfill the greed that is inside of us?
• Pray and examine your heart. Are you a greedy person? Is there something that you desire more than God? Be on your guard.
