This story is from Jon Hoover (Student Pastor, Calvary Baptist in Kingsport, TN)
My 6-year-old son was recently saved. I am often skeptical (or at least cautiously optimistic) about young children that age getting saved. I am the youth and children’s pastor at my church, and like many in my shoes, my son has been in church since nine months before he was born.
From a very young age (3 or 4), he has always had an interest in God and believed that God was real. My wife and I would always talk about the basics of the gospel with him—driving in the car, giving him a bath, dinnertime, etc. When our church began using The Gospel Project in August, it really helped drive a lot of this home for him. The first unit covers the basics of the God-Man-Christ-Response narrative of the gospel. The Big Picture Question & Answer cards helped him understand that sin is breaking God’s law, that it separates him from God, but God sent a savior to rescue him from his sin (the Christ Connection from Noah’s Ark helped here too).
A few months ago his Sunday school teacher asked him if he wanted to pray to receive Jesus and he said, “Yes.” Those were probably somewhat new words to him. We typically have talked about “believing”, “having faith”, “trusting”, “turning from sin”, etc. To make a long story short…one day he just told me he was a Christian now, and I said, “What do you mean, son?” He simply just said, “I told God I was sorry for my sins, and I believe Jesus died to take away my sins and give me his righteousness.” I believed him, and I believe God has saved him. We definitely see a change in his attitudes, the way he prays, and how he treats other people.
