Jesus in Genesis 1? I heard the story of creation dozens of times as a child, but I don’t remember the Son ever being a part of it. But God’s Word reveals the He was there. Not only was the Son present at creation, He had an active role in creation:
“For everything was created by Him,
in heaven and on earth,
the visible and the invisible,
whether thrones or dominions
or rulers or authorities—
all things have been created through Him and for Him.”
Colossians 1:16 (emphasis added)
Though He may not be mentioned by name until Matthew 1, the Son of God is present throughout the Old Testament. We get glimpses of Him in prophecies, types, symbols, and pictures of salvation. The entire Old Testament looks forward to, or points, to Jesus.
The Gospel Project for Kids features a Christ connection with each week’s Bible story. The Christ connection is a short paragraph designed to help kids and teachers see how all of Scripture points to Jesus.
In the first session, kids will study the story of creation in Genesis 1–2. For many kids, this story will be very familiar. Challenge kids to see the events of creation in a new way. Consider sharing John 1:3 and Romans 11:36. As you prepare to teach, pray that God would prepare the hearts of the kids in your group to receive His gospel story—a story that begins at creation; a story that changes everything.
