A devotional thought from Jared Wilson for “God Is Not Hiding”
Genesis 1:2 tells us that in the beginning “the earth was formless and empty, darkness covered the surface of the watery depths, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters.” Earth had not been formed just yet, but the Spirit was present in earth’s primordial state, ready to spring into action in the powerful words of God.
One absolutely vital truth we learn in the concept of general revelation is that God’s Spirit is still hovering on the surfaces of the earth. Officially sent by Jesus after His ascension and commissioned upon the church at the Day of Pentecost, we now have the Spirit’s presence roaming to and fro like the free wind, seeking whom He may comfort, convict, or counsel (John 3:8).
If the world is the theater of God’s glory, the Holy Spirit is still at work on God’s mission. The Spirit shines the spotlight on the glory of God’s eternal power and divine nature in the visible world and the glory of God in the gospel of Jesus Christ in the visible Word. Paul writes in Colossians 1:6 that the gospel “is bearing fruit and growing all over the world.”
This should be a great comfort to Christians because it means there is no place we can turn in creation where the Spirit of the omnipresent God isn’t active.
Pause and Reflect
• Why is it a comfort to you personally to know that God is at work everywhere? Be specific in relation to your present needs and struggles.
• How can you glorify God this week by joining the Spirit’s mission to bring conviction, comfort, and counsel to a believer in need or the message of the gospel to the lost?
