Crushing the Head of the Snake
One unique feature in The Gospel Project for Kids is the Christ connection included in each session. Each Christ connection helps kids and teachers see how all of Scripture points to Jesus. Last week, we saw that the Son had an active role in creation. In the second session, kids will hear the story “Sin Entered the World.”
Sin is the bad news. It is the very thing that separates us from a holy and loving God. God’s response to sin was swift and merciful. He immediately gave Adam and Eve a great gospel promise in Genesis 3:15.
I will put enmity between you and the woman,
and between your offspring and her offspring;
he shall bruise your head,
and you shall bruise his heel.
“This is the first gospel sermon that was ever delivered upon the surface of this earth.… There lie within it, as an oak lies within an acorn, all the great truths which make up the gospel of Christ.” (Charles Haddon Spurgeon, 1876)
Christ is that offspring of the woman. He was bruised in His suffering to claim victory over the serpent. Hebrews 2:14 reveals that through His death, Jesus destroyed the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil.
Understanding Genesis 3 is essential to understanding the rest of the Bible. Sin entered the world. God came after sinners with mercy and grace. Sinners were cursed, but God’s plan of redemption had begun. Jesus would come to crush the head of the snake and to redeem us from the curse by becoming a curse for us.
Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us, because it is written: Everyone who is hung on a tree is cursed. Galatians 3:13
