A Timeline Map: From Pencil to Print
Hi Everyone, I’m Jackie, one of two graphic designers having the privilege of working on The Gospel Project for Kids. Jeremy is the other designer and you will be meeting him soon.
Let me just say how much fun the process of creating this product has been. From the time we began brainstorming ideas for the logo, covers, timeline posters etc., the excitement kept building. We could not wait to see the first timeline poster come off the printing press. Seeing all of the posters hung on the wall here at LifeWay reinforced to The Gospel Project team, that this was a great tool in helping kids see the big picture of Jesus. I have to say I am a little sad that the bulk of that work has been completed!
The process we went through to get to the final timeline posters was quite extensive. We first determined that we wanted the kids to feel as though they were traveling from location to location, so we created themes or “stops” along the way to help build on that idea. We did not want it to look or feel like any ordinary Biblical timeline that was out there. We had looked at many and they were all so . . . well . . . ok I’ll say it,— boring! We wanted it to be fun, visually exciting, and something that would help the kids remember how the story of Jesus unfolds chronologically.
Once we really started thinking about the big picture, we came up with the idea of all 12 posters being combined to make one big scene. It was going to be challenging for an illustrator, so the search began. Jeremy and I looked at hundreds of illustration styles. We already knew that we were going to use two different styles, one for the backgrounds and one for the Biblical art. We wanted the two styles to be different, creating some visual contrast.
The process of developing the background art is quite interesting. For each poster, the illustrator would create a loose sketch and send it in for approval. The team would then discuss any change we thought were needed. From there he made the changes then began the process by building the art in Photoshop right on top of his revised but still very loose sketches. A lot of the imagery was based on photography that has been highly manipulated and or digitally painted on to get to the final look. Of course not all that you see is photography based. There is a sprinkling of traditional painting (digital painting, these days) throughout each one.
That’s it in a nutshell. Click on the image below to see the sketch and final poster side-by-side!

I love all the art work. You all did a fantastic job. We truly enjoy your creations. Are there more theme graphics available somewhere? I found the airplane. But I’d really like to have the cover pages to the other units as well as some clip art for decorating. I’m also finding that all the graphics are pdfs. Are they available as jpegs? I appreciate that we get so much material…just making sure I’m not overlooking anything. Thank you so much.
I teach the teen students at my church and one thing that could give you some extra work since you are near the end is make a timeline posters for the teen students. When they saw just how many posters the kids had and they got nothing it kind of bumned them out. Any chance in that happening?
Hey Kevin! I’ll pass along your feedback. Our team is working diligently on other materials for future quarters for Kids, Students, and Adults!
Hey Angie– we will be making some JPG clipart available for each unit from time to time. Keep an eye out for Unity 2 clipart really soon!
Is that clipart out yet? Not sure I am looking in the right place.
What clip art? We are on Session 4 and so far othe that the brief videos provided for additional help, I’ve not found anything. I really love the concept of this book, however, I am teaching the 6th, 7th, and 8th grade, and I am having trouble getting it down to their level. I really could use some digital videos to show the class or graphics to show them. These kids are at the “visual” age to keep them interested. I told them Sunday, it’s no longer “Mary had a Little Lamb” way of teaching, and of course one girl replied, “But I love MHaLL”. I’m so concerned that I am not going to do this justice. Any suggestions?
We’re having the same issue with 6th-8th graders. I read the leader’s guide, then read the student’s book, to try to find that “in between” area that I can try to break it down to their level. There are LOTS of words that us teachers have had to research – the material almost seems college-level or higher. Also our students have ASKED for additional materials, so I’m just going to try to make my own word search, crossword, etc. types of puzzles.
Is anyone having trouble logging in today? I’m looking forward to the Timeline arriving so we can use it!!!
Hey Heidi! Are you still having trouble logging in today?
The time line poster is to large no wall to put on, any suggestions?
Also have bullertin boards to decorate. Need more pictures and posters that are bigger enough to see. Timeline poster to small and nowear to display in our room. help.
Hey Bobbie– have you thought about using a clothesline type system for hanging your posters? A piece of string or wire across a wall would allow you to clip the posters up!
Have you checked out the small group visual pack? It contains 32 11 X 17 posters to create the timeline. This might be just what you’re looking for.
Where are you getting this visual pack? Please help. I so want my class to grow from these lessons and I need something more than me.
Hi Charlotte
You can purchase the Timeline Map and the Small Group Visual Pack from lifeway.com if you want to purchase the printed piece. If you want to download them yourself you can go to gospelproject.com and download them from the kids page. You will find them on the right hand side under Extra Fun Stuff. You will see extra Logos and Printables to download from there too.
This might not be the best solution, but you can also display a couple of posters at a time. We have 4 of them up in our wall. . .
Thank you so much for the hard work put into this! I love love love the artwork of this awesome curriculum. . .
Thanks, Olga!
Hi. We are on lesson 3 this week and are so excited! Our teachers are loving this! I am having trouble finding the lessons we have purchased after the fifth lesson. I also have signed in to My Curriculum Manager once but now I can’t find it.
Thanks for everything! You guys ROCK!
Oh no, Jenna! That sounds like a task for our tech team. Give them a call at 866-627-8553. Sorry about that!
We love the timeline posters and are planning to frame them as one unit and display them in the hallway. We have some talented volunteer woodworkers but are wondering what is the best way to attach them to the wall. Any suggestions?
I am new at this project and have had nothing but problems. The cd will not open on my computer so I can not prepare my Sunday School lesson for Kindergarten. What can I do?
We love the timeline! Is there a a way that you could offer a laminated version to purchase? We can’t find (yet) in the greater Houston area a place that can accommodate the width of each poster. We desperately want to protect them. Thank you!
My church has purchased to online access to The Gospel Project. Can I print the posters for the timeline?
I love the timeline. It’s absolutely gorgeous. However, Nineveh is spelled incorrectly both times on it, and once on the small group visual pack. Will that be fixed for future editions?
I also echo the person who wants it laminated. I’ve made so many holes in the sheets trying to staple them to the wall.
